August boose, MHC-LP

Associate therapist

Hi, I’m August! I’m a therapist at Body Liberation Collective, where I work with teens and adults who are struggling with food, their bodies, or both. Some of my clients have a diagnosis. Many don’t; they just know that eating and body image are taking up more room in their lives than they want. When my client is a teen, parents are part of the work. We’ll meet regularly, and if your child needs support around food at home, we’ll figure out your role together.

Before joining BLC, I was a Primary Therapist at The Renfrew Center in New York City, where I provided individual, family, and group therapy to patients with eating disorders as part of a multidisciplinary team. I started at Renfrew on the milieu floor, supporting patients through meals and snacks, so I’ve seen the hardest parts of recovery up close. I have a master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Fordham University and post-graduate training in CBT, DBT, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. In practice, I’m person-centered and integrative. Sessions with me feel like a conversation, and when talking isn’t getting at it, I’ll bring in narrative or creative approaches instead.

I believe anyone can have an eating disorder, in any body. People assume it looks a certain way, and that assumption is a big part of why so many people stay quiet and struggle alone. I don’t believe in diets, and I don’t believe your body is the problem. Most of us have picked up a lot of rules about food and bodies without ever deciding to, and part of this work is sorting out which ones are actually yours. Recovery, to me, means continuing to choose the life you want even when it feels impossible. It looks different for everyone.

If you’re a teen and you’re dreading this: I was fifteen and sitting in a therapist’s office once too, and I remember it. I won’t pretend it’s easy, I’ll always be straight with you and I’ll take what you say seriously.
